FAYI is the Greek word for food. It’s what its all about here at FAYI – FOOD! If you didn’t know, I’m Chrystalla, the author and creator at FAYI. You may be new around here or a long time follower but I thought it would be nice to take you back with me on my journey in FAYI. Hopefully it will let you know a bit more about what and why I do what I do.
I have a strong belief that so much of our life is impacted by food. I don’t just mean health as in our weight but our mental health, connection with others and our own independent journey.
You see, being Greek, every event and occasion is surrounded by food. We go to someones house and we will be served a coffee and cake. Or we have friends over, most likely it will end up being a souvla (barbecue) that lasts long into the night. As you can see in the photo, every time we gather as a family, it will be over food.
This is where the FAYI story began. With our strong belief about food and what it does for us. It connects us with our friends and family. It brings comfort, love, joy and so much more.
However, my thoughts watching the older generation was that we were loosing many of the traditions and cultural behaviours because of the loss of recipes. For example, a lot of my generation no longer gifted plates of food out over Easter because they no longer made all the traditional dishes during that time. It was time to change that and get cooking with the ones that do it best. Yiayia, grandma, aunties and many others.
MEZZE – Small Plates To Share
This is how the creation of my first cookbook Mezze – small plates to share was created. I wanted dishes that we could enjoy together. Traditional ones so we could keep those memories alive and then ones that had been altered so those with dietary requirements were always included. It always has and will be about you, the stories, food and traditions to pass onto your children and what that will bring for the generations to come.

Christmas and Easter Collection
Further into the FAYI journey, we brought you a Christmas and Easter ebook. Recipes that were traditionally cooked on those days but also throughout the year for dinners, barbecues and special occasions.

An avgolemono that I think should be on every house hold menu to nourish the soul.
These are the recipes to enjoy with your family, share with your friends and for you to gift and enjoy with new friends. They are the recipes you will pass onto your children so they too will pass onto theirs.
Finally, it was time to bring you the Salad Collection. What’s a barbecue without some beautiful fresh salads. Inspired right from the home grown gardens of my family, to the salad my aunties are known for and then even to the modernised salad and dishes shared by my god brother and cousins.
These are recipes I hope you will enjoy to add a bit of freshness, warmth and variation into your life. Help your children see the colour and beauty in what’s been eaten for generations. Show them the ways it has been modernised with our Thermomix and dependent on what’s in season and available.
Remember, what we choose to eat will reflect onto our children and what they will remember as they grow up. Choose to love on them with all the things that will bring them moments, experiences and much happiness.
