How To Make A Number 1 Birthday Cake
To make a number 1 birthday cake, first bake a cake in a 6″ square tin. This document from Cake Central is a very helpful guide.
Step 1: Select Your Recipe & Bake The Cake
There are lots of recipes to choose from. For this particular occasion we used two different cake recipes and layered them on top of each other.

Step 2: Use a ruler to measure out your cut lines.
Step 3: Cut the cake in to three equal parts.
Step 4: If using a double layer cake, cut the edges of both cakes to ensure they are the same size.
Step 5: Cut the top part of the number one on an angle.
Step 6: Stack the cakes evenly on top of each other (if using double layers)

Step 7: Make a chocolate ganache and cover the entire cake. Put the cake in the fridge to set.
Step 8: Add a second layer of ganache and put it back in the fridge to set.
Step 9: Use the fondant that you have prepared earlier to cover the cake.

Step 10: Make decorations out of fondant. Gum paste is helpful to hold big pieces of fondant in shape.
Step 11: Put the cake on a cake board. This one has been decorated with an Avengers poster.
