According to the Orthodox calendar, Cheesefare is celebrated during the last week before Great Lent – which is the last week before the fasting period begins in preparing for Easter.
Once Great Lent begins, food such as meat, fish and dairy products are forbidden. Cheesefare represents the “last chance” to eat dairy products before fasting begins.
Meatfare is similar however it is celebrated the week before Cheesefare and represents that last time to eat meat products before Great Lent.
The food that is eaten during Great Lent is know as Nestia food. Depending on the day and how strict you are fasting, nestia food is usually vegetarian or vegan.
