SMELLY THURSDAY – TSIKNOPEMPTI
Today is Tsiknopempti (Smelly Thursday) and in Greece everyone will soon be eating meat cooked on the BBQ or Souvla. It is the perfect time for us to share all of our Greek meat recipes with you so that you can make them in your Thermomixer.
The word Tsiknopempti from the two translated Greek words to mean the smell of burning food or the smell of burnt meat in particular and Thursday which is “pempti”.
Traditionally Smelly Thursday is celebrated during the week of Meat Fare – the final week in which Orthodox Christians are permitted to eat meat before the 40 days of Lent begins. It is preparation for Easter.
In modern days, the Greek celebrate Smelly Thursday very similar to the way Americans celebrate Halloween. If you were to walk down the streets of Greece today you would see people dressed up in costumes, the celebration of Carnival, BBQ's on the side of the street and friends getting together to drink wine, play loud music and enjoy good food together.
